Die Firma Capitol Records, Inc. wurde 1942 von den Songwritern Johnny Mercer, Buddy DeSylva und Plattenladenbesitzer Glenn Wallichs in Hollywood, Kalifornien gegründet.
2001 fusionierte die EMI Group Plc das Capitol Records Label mit dem Label Priority Records.
2012 Capitol Records wurde von Vivendi S.A. (Inhaber der Universal Music Group) gekauft.
